eBay is cutting about 9% of its workforce, roughly 1,000 jobs. CEO Jamie Iannone told staff in a memo that the marketplace is simplifying operations and shifting resources to its fastest-growing areas, and CNBC reports a company spokesperson confirmed the cuts on Wednesday, the second round this year after about 800 employees left in February. The company had about 12,300 employees at the end of last year, and eMarketer notes revenue and GMV each rose 15% in Q2, with focus categories like collectibles and fashion up 26%.
The timing matters for the archive market. eBay bought Depop from Etsy for $1.4 billion, a deal CNBC says closed in July, and it has pushed authenticated luxury and collectibles hard while its shares beat the S&P 500 this year. The immediate watch for resale is practical: listing tools, seller fees and fraud checks get revisited after a cut this size. The company reports Q3 within a week, where the restructuring charges should appear.
Until the tools change, the listings sit. Gallery Dept. sells a tee that prints the word eBay, cream, 150 euro on the index, and searching Vaquera on the same index returns 72 garments from the runway label that now has a sneaker with Converse coming.
